Prostate surgery is not one operation. The appropriate procedure depends on whether the problem is benign prostate enlargement (BPH), prostate cancer, urinary retention, bladder complications or another condition.
Two very different prostate pathways
Enlarged prostate (BPH)
When medicines are no longer adequate, surgery may be considered for symptoms, recurrent urinary retention, repeated infections, bladder stones, bleeding or effects on the kidneys. Endoscopic options can include HoLEP, TURP and other techniques. The choice should be based on prostate size, anatomy, anticoagulants, bladder function, local expertise and the patient's priorities.
Prostate cancer
Localised prostate cancer may be managed with surgery, radiation or active surveillance in selected patients. More advanced disease can require combinations of systemic treatment, radiation and other approaches. International patients benefit from having the diagnosis and staging reviewed before travelling.
