TURP and HoLEP are both endoscopic operations used to relieve obstruction caused by benign prostate enlargement. They are not interchangeable in every situation, and the choice should be individualised.
How they differ in broad terms
TURP
A well-established endoscopic technique that removes obstructing prostate tissue, commonly using an electrosurgical loop.
HoLEP
Uses a holmium laser to enucleate obstructing adenoma along the surgical plane, with tissue subsequently removed from the bladder.
What matters most
Prostate size and anatomy, patient health, anticoagulation, bladder function and surgeon experience all influence procedure choice.

The practical question is not simply “which operation is newer?” but which procedure an experienced urologist recommends for the patient's anatomy and priorities, and how recovery fits with the planned duration of stay in India.
